  1. Where can I find the institution reference numbers?
If you scroll down to the bottom of the Author/Institution page you will see the area where you enter the institution information for your abstract. Once that is entered, take the corresponding institution number (listed to the left of each entry) and put it in the institution reference space of the author that belongs to that institution.

  2. How do I add bold, underline, or italics to my abstract?
    Internet Explorer
    users
Use the Formatting Buttons. To add special formatting to your abstract highlight the text to be formatted and click on the appropriate symbol on the formatting menu. The formatting menu can be found to the right of the Character Map button.

    Netscape or MAC users
To add special formatting to your text, you must type a special code before and after the text you want to format. For example, to add bold formatting to a word or phrase in your abstract, you would enter the following information:

    [bold] word or phrase [/bold]
The special codes are as follows:

Bold: Insert [bold] before the text and [/bold] after the text.
Italic: Insert [italic] before the text and [/italic] after the text.
Underline: Insert [underline] before the text and [/underline] after the text.

  3. How do I insert special characters or symbols?
To add a Greek character or symbol , click the character you wish to insert on the Character Map. The program will automatically insert at the end of the text a special code for that character in the text box. You will then need to copy the code and place it within the text of your abstract where you would like it. Another way to do this is to insert the character name in [square brackets]. For example: [alpha], [plusminus] or [prime]

To create a table, click on Add/Edit table, enter the number of columns and rows then click ok. You will come to a screen that will have the row and columns set up for you. You will then need to enter the data in each cell. When you preview your abstract the table will appear as it should.

  5. How do I format a table?
To add Greek characters and symbols, click on the Character Map within the Add/Edit Table screen. You can also use the special bracket codes for bold, italics, underline, superscript and subscript. Click on the Formatting Help button to see instructions on how to add these types of formatting. The "Preview Abstract" screen will show boxes around each table entry. The boxes will be removed prior to publication and the table will appear in a standard table format.

  6. How do I insert a figure?
To add a figure to your abstract, click on Add/Edit a Figure. Type the number of images you would like to include in your abstract and hit the Save button. By hitting Save it will allow you to upload your image. Click on the Browse button, find your saved image, and double click on it. After you have done this, click on the Upload button to upload your figure. You must then show within the abstract text where you would like the image placed. Type [figure1] in the text where you want your image to be placed. You can preview your image after uploading it by clicking on the Preview Image icon. It is recommended that a hard copy of the image is mailed to Marathon Multimedia so that there is a hard copy on file.

  8. Why was I able to create a username and password, but when I try to enter any other information the server times out or hangs?
You may have a firewall at the location you are working from. Speak to your System's Administrator on how to take down the firewall or get around it. You can also try submitting from home or another location.

  9. When I leave the authors (or any other) data entry screen and then come back it appears to have lost all of my changes. Is my data lost and if so, how can I get it back?
Your data is probably not lost if you hit the save key. What is happening is your computer or server is caching pages, or displaying the page as it remembers it when first opened. If you hit the reload/refresh button you will force the computer to go out and get a fresh copy of the page, which should have your changes reflected on it.

  10. When I try to paste a simple table into the body of the abstract it looks okay where I inserted it, but when I go to the preview it doesn't look right. How can I get it to hold?
The submission program does not allow tables to be pasted directly into the body of the abstract. To ensure that we receive the table in the proper format you are required to enter any tabular information into the table function built into the program. Simply click on add/edit table and enter the data into the cells provided.

  11. After entering all of my abstract information the program says my abstract is too long. I cut and pasted the body of my abstract into another program and the word count is well below the character limit. Why is the program saying my abstract is long?
The program counts all published sections of the abstract when determining the size. You would need to take the authors, institutions, title, and body (along with table and figure if present) into account to get an accurate size count using another program. Spaces are also included in the character count.

  12. Why am I unable to create a username and password?
In the process of creating a username and password you also have to provide a secret word or phrase. This is required in case you forget your password. You will be asked for your secret word or phrase and once you give the correct answer you will then be given your password. If you are unable to create a username and password it is most likely that this secret word or phrase has already been used by another person. The secret word or phrase is a unique identifier so it can only be used once. Try using a different secret word or phrase to create your login.

  13. Why does my abstract print out on more than one page?
If you have an image within your abstract and it has large dimensions it will push the abstract onto a second page. You need to resize your image's dimensions and re-upload it so that it fits onto one page.
